"Were not our hearts burning (within us) while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?" (Lk 24:32)
Adult faith formation, according to the United States Catholic Bishops, is the process “. . . by which people consciously grow in the life of Christ through experience, reflection, prayer, and study . . . , positioning it at the heart of our catechetical vision and practice”(Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us: A Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation in the United States #5-6). Why were the hearts of the two disciples burning as they walked along the road to Emmaus? “They were burning because in Jesus the disciples caught a glimpse into the heart of God and found their world made new”(#11). Growing in faith empowers all of us to respond to Jesus’ call echoed in our mission statement, “Make Disciples.”
