The Upcoming Papal Conclave: A Time of Prayer and Sacred Tradition
On Wednesday, May 7, the 135 cardinals eligible to elect the next pope will enter the Sistine Chapel to begin the solemn process of the conclave. Earlier that day, they will gather in St. Peter’s Basilica to celebrate the Mass for the Election of the Roman Pontiff, invoking the guidance of the Holy Spirit before they process to the Sistine Chapel that evening.
In preparation for this sacred event, the Vatican Museums have announced the closure of the Sistine Chapel to visitors beginning April 28. This allows time to install essential elements for the conclave, including the traditional stove used to burn the ballots and the chimney through which smoke will signal the progress—and eventually the outcome—of the election to the world.
Join in Prayer for the Conclave The College of Cardinals has humbly requested the prayers of all Catholics during this time of discernment. May the Holy Spirit guide their hearts as they seek the man chosen by God to succeed Pope Francis. Here is a list of all the cardinals participating in the conclave.
The Pontifical Mission Societies USA invites the faithful to “Adopt a Cardinal Elector” and commit to praying for him as the conclave approaches. There is also a random Cardinal generator that chooses a cardinal for you to pray for.
You can participate in many ways:
Pray a bead, a decade, or a full Rosary
Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet
Dedicate a Holy Hour
Offer your daily prayers with this special intention
Prayer for the Cardinals Holy Spirit, enlighten the Church at this time, especially all the cardinals you call to take part in the conclave. Grant them wisdom and holiness so that all may cooperate with your inspiration and guidance to elect the next Vicar of Christ, your chosen servant. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Another Prayer for the Cardinals Father in heaven, send your Holy Spirit upon these men to grant them the wisdom and discernment needed to choose the next successor of St. Peter. May they be filled with humility and have hearts open to hear Your voice clearly. Amen.
Novenas for the Conclave Deepen your prayer with a novena:
Novena Prayer for the Papal Conclave Father Most Holy, Our God and King, protect Your Church in this time of transition. Guide the Cardinals in their sacred duty. Grant them wisdom and courage, hope and charity, and the faith they need to discern Your holy will... May Your holy will be done, now and forever. Amen.
Prayer from the Roman Missal As we pray for the repose of Pope Francis, we also ask God’s guidance in the election of a new pope:
O God, Eternal Shepherd, Who govern Your flock with unfailing care, Grant in Your boundless fatherly love a pastor for Your Church who will please You by his holiness and to us show watchful care. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
